Radiator mounting

Afternoon all,

I'm looking for a bit of info on radiator mounting. I've recently had my radiator recored, but as part of the refurb they replaced the sides of the rad which contained the mounting holes. My car has the radiator mounts which are angled thus: / (side view!). Previously the mounting had been "engineered" so that it was more upright. However before I start drilling holes to allow it to be mounted upright, I was wondering if there was any particular issue with mounting the rad at an angle?

Cheers,

Dave

Thanks Dave. Is the mounting the same on your Fury? As my chassis is a modified Fury I assume they may be similar.

The most efficient angle for max airflow is the top tilting forward about 3 inches which is how mine is mounted . Fan sucking mounted inside. This ensures that most air hits the face of the rad at 90 degrees.

Mounting the rad at an angle also increases the cooling eff% due to the air travelling further over the fins. Think hypotenuse and you'll be on the right track

Thanks chaps.

Rob - when you say the top mounted forward, I take it you mean towards the front of the car (like this \ when looking from the side)? I ask as this is the opposite way to the mounts on my car so would need quite a bit of fettling to achieve!

Thanks Rob, looks like a need to knock up some brackets then!

If a radiator is angled it will provide more air resistance, allowing better heat transfer to the air as the air takes a bit longer to travel over the fins. There is an optimum limit to the angle, someone on LCB did a load of analysis into it.

One thing to note: angle or not, air will find the easiest way past so if you don't duct the air and force it through the radiator then you will find air prefers to go around and not through the radiator, meaning its less efficient, the more angle you have the more important the ducting.
